Additional “dough” announced for Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase
The professional category winners will be awarded $1,500 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. With more than25 professional entries in 2012, stiff competition is expected for the fifth annual event, which kicks off in front of judges Dominique & Cindy Duby, chefs and owners of Wild Sweets and critically acclaimed Designer Chocolatetier, on Nov. 19, 2013.
With the showcase slotted to run until Jan. 4, 2014, bakers compete head-to-head in their respective categories by creating intricate, and delicious, gingerbread creations that are made of 100 per cent edible ingredients. “Each year we see Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase grow in both the diversity and the imagination behind the amazing houses, which truly are creations of art more than creations of food,” says Ian Powell, managing director of Inn at Laurel Point. “As we continue to expand this event and celebrate the ingenuity of every participant, we also help raise badly needed funds for people in need of affordable, and non-edible, homes.”
All funds raised from the public support Habitat for Humanity Victoria and its efforts to make affordable homeownership possible for low-income families living in the Victoria region. During Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase, Nov. 23, 2013 to Jan. 4, 2014, members of the public are invited to view the sweet creations and, in exchange for a donation to Habitat for Humanity Victoria, vote for their favourite. Last year’s event raised a record amount of funds, in excess of $16,000.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Inn at Laurel Point for the fifth consecutive year on this high-profile fundraising event,” says Yolanda Meijer, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Victoria. “Funds raised through the showcase will help Habitat begin work on its 23rd home, and ensure that we can continue to provide affordable homeownership opportunities to families in the region.”
In addition to hosting Canada’s National Gingerbread Showcase, Inn at Laurel Point is offering a Gingerbread Package from Nov. 22, 2013 to Jan. 1, 2014 that includes one-night accommodation; a special gingerbread welcome amenity; gingerbread dessert for two in AURA; and complimentary parking.
